THE PULSE OF AMSTERDAM
WINS ‘ROOF OF THE YEAR’
The Pulse of Amsterdam, award winning rooftop
The Pulse of Amsterdam
is a stunning example of what a large-scale rooftop can achieve. The landscape south of The Pulse rises up into a rooftop garden of unprecedented size. To make this possible, the structure was designed from the very beginning to accommodate a heavy roof load, with deep planting beds integrated into the design. As a result, the structural frame essentially became a massive planter. The continuous greenery from ground level to rooftop is particularly striking. The roof truly becomes part of the three-dimensional outdoor space—making the entire building an integral part of Amsterdam’s green infrastructure.
Beyond its structural concept, architectural detailing, and large-scale hub function, the jury praised the project’s sustainable design. Highlights include a fully self-sufficient green system with 550 cubic meters of water retention on the upper green roofs, an underground buffer beneath the parking garage, and numerous features that promote biodiversity. The BREEAM Outstanding and WELL Platinum certifications demonstrate the high sustainability value of The Pulse. Achieving this required close collaboration from the very start. And of course, a project this exceptional can only begin with a client truly committed to realizing their sustainability ambitions.
Quote:“One of the most thoughtfully designed roofs, where functionality and structure come together in a rooftop garden.”
